Gas price hike blamed on smuggling

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The smuggling of liquefied gas to Pakistan has resulted in increased prices of the commodity in southern Kandahar province, dealers alleged on Thursday.

They said people could not afford buying gas due to its high rate, urging the government to prevent smuggling of gas to the energy-deficient neighbouring country.

A gas dealer in Kandahar City’s Herat Bazaar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the price of one kilogram of gas had shot up from 45 and 50 afghanis a month back to 70 and 75 afs today.

Stucco, chalk illegally excavated in Kandahar

KANDAHAR (PAN): A large number of separate groups of people have started illegally excavating stucco and chalk in huge quantity in Daman district of southern Kandahar province, with the government doing nothing to prevent the looting, an official said Saturday.

Eng. Mohammad Sadiq, provincial mining control chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the mines in northern parts of Daman produced around 22,242 cubic metres stucco a year.

Illegal mining blamed on insecurity

KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): With insecurity scaring away investors, government efforts have failed so far to estimate mineral deposits or prevent their illegal extraction in southern Kandahar province, officials admit.

Insecurity has led to unlimited illegal mining operations in the cement and copper-rich region and the Taliban birthplace, officials at the provincial mines department say, blaming warlords for the messy situation.
