KABUL (PAN): President Hamid Karzai on Sunday expressed deep sorrows over deaths resulting from a coalmine blast in northern Samangan province.

Twenty-seven workers were killed during the explosion that left five people missing and 30 others trapped in the mine in Ravi Do Aab district.

In a statement from his office, the president extended his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and directed the authorities to provide them all possible assistance.

He asked the minister of mines and petroleum to visit Samangan to investigate the incident and ensure that such blasts did not occur in the future.

Karzai ordered the minister to coordinate with provincial authorities in providing emergency assistance to the victims’ relatives and effective medical care to the injured.
